About Gnanodaya

The invariable ark of a dream is to see it come true.

Gnanodaya School is located in Venkatapuram Village, about 45km from Chennai. The school has strength of 122 children, around 51 children from different leprosy colonies of Tamil Nadu stay in hostel. The school also accommodates 71 children from nearby villages to promote integration from early ages. The school educates the children up to the 10th standard and we are proud to say that in 2009 10th standard examination the children achieved hundred percent results.

The school was started by DIK (German Association for Children’s Education). Impressed by the Work done by St. John’s Leprosy Welfare Association, DIK helped to purchase land to construct the school and hostel buildings using their FCRA (Foreign Currency Regulation Act) permission. After 10 years of exemplary work there was a split in St. John’s leprosy Welfare Association. Unfortunately the members of the formed association were not interested in running the school. In order not to disrupt the education of the children “Gnanodaya Rehabilitation Association” was newly formed and the school along with the playground and agricultural land has been brought under this association. Today, Gnanodaya Rehabilitation Association is collaborating with DIK to run the school.

Since it takes time to obtain FCRA permission for the new association, there is an urgent need to raise local funds to run the school and maintain the hostel as otherwise the children have to be sent home which would be a great pity.
